A bullet entered the office of Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid at the team’s practice facility last spring while he was inside, according to a report by the Kansas City Star published Wednesday. The incident took place in early May 2024.
The Kansas City Star cited multiple sources stating that Reid was working alone when a bullet fired from outside pierced his office window and blinds before lodging in a wall between his bathroom and entry door. Following the incident, bulletproof glass was installed at the facility.
According to the report, two additional bullets struck other parts of the building, with one hitting the third floor and another damaging an outdoor air-conditioning unit. Few members of the organization were reportedly aware of what happened.
Kansas City police described the event as being investigated as an aggravated assault due to people being present in the building at the time. There were no injuries or direct hits on any individuals. Police have not filed charges or made arrests and continue their investigation.
In a statement released Thursday, Kansas City police said: “Based on investigation to this point there is no indication this was a targeted incident at any person or organization.”
A spokesperson for the Chiefs declined to comment to the Associated Press on Wednesday night.
The shooting occurred months after Reid led the Chiefs to win back-to-back Super Bowl championships, securing their third title in five years. Last season, Kansas City won another AFC championship but lost in the final to Philadelphia. Reid has compiled a 273-146-1 record over 12 seasons with Kansas City and 14 with Philadelphia, ranking him fourth on the all-time National Football League wins list behind Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinee Don Shula, George Halas and Bill Belichick.
