A report from the Kansas City Star says a bullet was fired into the office of Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid at the team’s practice facility in early May 2024 while he was inside. Multiple sources told the Star that Reid was working alone when a bullet fired from outside broke through glass, made a hole in his window and blinds, and got lodged in a wall between his bathroom and entry door. Bulletproof glass was installed shortly afterward.
According to the Star’s report, two more bullets struck other areas of the facility: one hit the third floor and another an outdoor air-conditioning unit. Few within the organization reportedly knew about the event.
Kansas City police said Thursday that because the building was occupied during the incident, it is being investigated as aggravated assault. No injuries occurred. “Based on investigation to this point there is no indication this was a targeted incident at any person or organization,” police said in a statement.
No arrests or charges have been made; police say their investigation continues. A spokesman for the Chiefs declined to comment Wednesday night.
The shooting took place not long after Reid led Kansas City to consecutive Super Bowl championships and its third title in five years. Last season, Kansas City again won its conference but lost to Philadelphia in the final game.
Reid has compiled a 273-146-1 record as head coach over 12 seasons with Kansas City and 14 with Philadelphia. He ranks fourth on the National Football League’s all-time wins list behind Don Shula, George Halas, and Bill Belichick.
