A bullet struck the office of Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid more than one year ago in an incident that had not been publicly disclosed until this week. The event took place in May 2024, with police responding to a call at the team’s training facility near GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri.

Police records show officers arrived on site at 1:27 a.m. on May 4, 2024, after overnight security reported hearing a noise and finding what appeared to be a bullet hole in a window.

“When officers arrived, they were told by overnight security that someone in the building alerted them to hearing a noise and observed what appeared to be a bullet hole in a window,” Police Sgt. Phil DiMartino said in a statement. DiMartino added, “The building ‘was occupied at the time of the bullet coming through the window,’ but no one was ‘struck, and there were no injuries associated with the incident.’ (…) There is no indication this was a targeted incident at any person or organization.”

There have been no arrests related to the case.

Chiefs president Mark Donovan commented on why information about the incident was not immediately released. “We sat with the experts on both the investigation side, as well as the communication side, as well as the safety side, and we decided this was the right path to take,” Donovan told reporters during an annual business luncheon for season kickoff.

Andy Reid remains among the most successful active coaches in National Football League history. He ranks No. 4 all-time for regular-season wins behind Don Shula, George Halas and Bill Belichick.

The shooting happened during National Football League offseason activities following nearly three months after Kansas City’s Super Bowl victory over San Francisco and ahead of preseason preparations. The city has experienced other recent gun violence incidents; during last year’s Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl victory parade on February 14, there was gunfire nearby which resulted in fatalities including local DJ Lisa Lopez-Galvan.
