A bullet struck the office of Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid in early May 2024 while he was present, according to a report by the Kansas City Star. The incident took place at the team’s practice facility and was not widely known within the organization. The report states that Reid was working alone when a bullet fired from outside penetrated the window and blinds, ultimately lodging in a wall between his bathroom and entry door. Following this event, the team installed bulletproof glass in Reid’s office.
According to the Kansas City Star, two additional bullets hit other parts of the facility—one struck the third floor and another an outdoor air-conditioning unit. Authorities are investigating the matter as aggravated assault because the building was occupied at the time of the shooting. Police confirmed that no one was injured during the incident.
Police also stated there have been no charges or arrests and that their investigation remains open. “Based on investigation to this point there is no indication this was a targeted incident at any person or organization,” said police in a statement released Thursday.
A spokesperson for the Chiefs declined to comment on Wednesday night regarding details of the event.
The incident occurred months after Reid led Kansas City to its second consecutive Super Bowl victory and third championship in five years. Last season, Kansas City again reached the AFC title but lost to Philadelphia. Reid currently ranks fourth all-time in NFL coaching wins behind Don Shula, George Halas, and Bill Belichick with a record of 273-146-1 over his twelve seasons with Kansas City and fourteen with Philadelphia.
