Marv Levy, Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinee and former Buffalo Bills head coach, was the subject of widespread death rumors on social media late Wednesday night and Thursday morning. The speculation quickly gained traction online, with Facebook posts receiving thousands of likes that claimed Levy had died.
The viral post stated, “Heartbreaking news emerged that former Buffalo Bills head coach Marv Levy has passed away. Known for his fiery spirit, sharp wit, and unmatched leadership, Levy carved his name into NFL history by guiding the Bills to an unprecedented four consecutive Super Bowl appearances in the early 1990s,” according to the Facebook message.
However, these reports were proven false by sources close to Levy in Buffalo. Local radio station Country 106.5 clarified the situation: “No, he did not (die),” reported the outlet. They continued, “It is insane what the internet can do, but it is also a little scary the fake accounts that people believe and are willing to reshare.”
Levy recently marked his 100th birthday on Aug. 3 and spoke about this milestone with humor: “Well, I’d prefer to be turning 25, to tell you the truth,” he told the official website of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He also expressed appreciation for his family during this time: “He also spoke about how thankful he feels for his wife, Frannie, and daughter, Kimberly.”
Despite turning one hundred years old earlier this month, Levy remains active as a football fan and plans to watch the Buffalo Bills face off against the Ravens in their season opener on Sept. 7.
Levy remains alive and engaged with both family and football.
