The Buena High School football team in Sierra Vista will start the new season with running back Michael Lujan taking on a larger role. With Andres “Scrappy” Bonilla, who amassed 4,371 rushing yards during his time at Buena, moving on to the University of Jamestown in North Dakota, Lujan is set to take over as the lead rusher.
Last year, Lujan and Bonilla split duties in the backfield. Now that Bonilla has graduated, expectations have shifted onto Lujan’s performance for the upcoming season. During practice sessions last week, Lujan was seen working closely with his teammates and running through drills behind his offensive line.
Lujan contributed significantly to Buena’s win at Casa Grande last season, demonstrating his ability to find openings and advance the ball on key plays. Coaches and players alike are preparing for a schedule where Lujan will be counted upon to generate much of the offense on the ground.
