The Cleveland Browns‘ decision to draft Shedeur Sanders as their quarterback has drawn attention and debate in the lead-up to the NFL season. Sanders, who was expected to be a first-round pick after a standout college career at the University of Colorado, was ultimately selected by the Browns with pick No. 144 in the fifth round. His fall in the draft and subsequent placement on the team’s depth chart have generated discussion among analysts and fans.
Cleveland Browns Head Coach Kevin Stefanski has faced scrutiny regarding his management of the rookie quarterbacks, including Sanders and Dillon Gabriel. Despite criticism, Stefanski—who has twice been named NFL Coach of the Year—has maintained his approach during training camp. Sanders has reportedly performed well in practices and impressed during his playing opportunities, notably throwing two touchdown passes against the Carolina Panthers‘ starters.
After roster decisions were made, Joe Flacco was named starting quarterback for the Browns, with Gabriel as backup and Sanders as third on the depth chart following Kenny Pickett’s departure from the team. Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinee Joe Thomas commented on how Stefanski and the organization have handled their young quarterbacks.
“I think the Browns have done a good job, in spite of some outside national criticism, of protecting the rookies, putting them in as many situations as possible to help them grow and develop without destroying their confidence,” said Joe Thomas.
Cleveland is set to open its season against the Cincinnati Bengals with Flacco as starter. However, if there are struggles at quarterback early in the season, attention may quickly turn to Gabriel or even Sanders as possible options moving forward.
