Over the offseason, the San Francisco 49ers finalized a long-term agreement with quarterback Brock Purdy. On May 16, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Purdy and the team reached a five-year contract valued at $265 million, including $181 million in guaranteed money.
The team has decided to move forward with Purdy as their starting quarterback for the foreseeable future. Recently, Purdy was compared to a former San Francisco 49ers quarterback by former Seattle Seahawks running back Robert Turbin during an appearance on 95.7 The Game’s “Willard & Dibs.” Turbin stated, “49ers fans may not want to hear this, but I think Brock Purdy is very similar to Jimmy Garoppolo (…) Purdy is clearly a better player, but he brings stability to the Niners in the way Garoppolo did.”
At one point during his career in San Francisco, Garoppolo also had significant support from the organization and led the team to a Super Bowl appearance in 2020. Some see comparisons between Garoppolo and Purdy as positive.
In an article published on May 21 by CBS News San Francisco, Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinee John Lynch confirmed that the organization remains committed to Purdy as their quarterback. Lynch said, “Brock is a tremendous leader and a fantastic representative for the 49ers organization, and we are ecstatic to get this deal done (…) When we took him with the last pick in the draft, we knew he had potential to succeed in this league, but we had no idea how special of a player he would become. He has played at an exceptionally high level since taking over the starting job, and we look forward to seeing him continue to lead this team for years to come.”
Drafted with the final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, Purdy led San Francisco to an NFC Championship Game as a rookie and reached Super Bowl 58 during his second season.
Since becoming starting quarterback in Week 14 of 2022, Purdy achieved ten straight wins—tying for second-most wins ever by an NFL quarterback at career start. He set several league records early in his career: most games within three seasons with two or more passing touchdowns and passer rating of at least 115.0 (15 games), along with league marks for games reaching passer ratings of 120.0, 130.0, and 140.0 or higher over that span.
In 2023, Purdy set franchise single-season records with 4,280 passing yards and a passer rating of 113.0—the highest among all quarterbacks that year.
San Francisco’s front office considers these results evidence that Purdy has played an important role for their success and justified their decision on his contract extension.
