The Chicago Bears have marked a quarter-century of football in the 21st century, and with it comes a reflection on some of the standout players who have contributed to the team’s defense and special teams. As the 2025-26 NFL season unfolds, fans recall both triumphant moments, such as the NFC championship win in 2006, and challenging periods under coaches like Marc Trestman and Matt Eberflus.
Looking back at the best defensive players since 2001, two names stand out: Julius Peppers and Khalil Mack. Both players made significant impacts during their tenures with the Bears. Julius Peppers played for Chicago from 2010 to 2013, earning three Pro Bowl selections and two All-Pro honors. He amassed 37.5 sacks during this period and was fourth in Defensive Player of the Year voting in 2010. Known for his exceptional physical abilities and pass-rushing skills, Peppers is regarded as one of the top free agent signings in Bears history.
Khalil Mack joined the Bears from 2018 to 2021 following a trade that proved highly beneficial for Chicago. Like Peppers, Mack earned three Pro Bowl nods and two All-Pro selections while with the team. Despite missing two games in 2018, he finished second in Defensive Player of the Year voting that year. Over four seasons with Chicago, Mack recorded 40.5 sacks.
In addition to their time with the Bears, Julius Peppers had an illustrious career overall, recording a total of 159.5 sacks and forcing 52 fumbles as both a defensive end and linebacker. He was originally drafted by the Carolina Panthers as the second overall pick in the first round of the 2002 NFL Draft.
