Barry Sanders‘ 1988 season at Oklahoma State University remains a remarkable chapter in college football history. During his Heisman Trophy-winning campaign, Sanders set 34 NCAA records. In 11 regular-season games, he rushed for 2,628 yards and scored 37 touchdowns. Including his performance in the Holiday Bowl, where he gained 222 yards and scored five touchdowns in three quarters, his totals reached 2,850 yards and 42 touchdowns.
Sanders began the season by becoming the first player to open two consecutive seasons with a 100-yard kickoff return. He consistently delivered multiple rushing touchdowns each game, with three instances of scoring five touchdowns. His achievements included breaking records for rushing yards, all-purpose yards, points scored, rushing touchdowns, and total touchdowns.
Sanders received the Heisman Trophy while Oklahoma State was in Tokyo for the Coca-Cola Classic against Texas Tech. He won across all six voting regions.
Throughout his career as a running back, Sanders achieved ten seasons with over 1,000 rushing yards, scored 109 touchdowns overall, and accumulated 15,269 rushing yards.
