Barry Sanders, a Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinee and former Detroit Lions running back, has spoken out about his recovery after suffering a heart attack in June 2024. Sanders, recognized for his athletic achievements and durability during his NFL career, described the unexpected health event that occurred while he was on a recruiting visit with his son over Father’s Day weekend.
Initially dismissing his symptoms as heartburn, Sanders explained that persistent chest pains led him to seek medical attention. He said a hospital visit revealed elevated enzyme levels, prompting further tests which confirmed he had experienced a heart attack.
“Of all things, I don’t know why, that just never entered my mind,” Sanders told CBS Sports.
Sanders reflected on how the experience shifted his perspective. For his recent birthday, instead of holding a celebration as usual, he visited a hospital to learn more about heart disease. He shared this decision and its motivation in remarks made on the NFL Players Second Acts Podcast: “This was a special birthday getting to just really learn about heart disease and meeting other people who’s had different struggles. You know, mine could’ve been much worse. So, just understanding different risk factors and just becoming aware,” Sanders said.
In addition to raising personal awareness about cardiac health risks, Sanders participated in “The Making of a Heart Attack” documentary. He stated: “There was ‘The Making of a Heart Attack’ documentary that I was a part of, and really just talking about my story, but also the story of other individuals.”
Sanders indicated that sharing his experience publicly was important due to the potential severity of heart attacks and their sudden onset. By speaking out and participating in educational efforts, he hopes to encourage others to be mindful of cardiovascular health.
