Barry Sanders, a Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinee and former Detroit Lions running back, has spoken publicly about his recovery from the heart attack he suffered in June 2024. The health event occurred while Sanders was on a recruiting visit with his son during Father’s Day weekend. Initially attributing his chest pains to heartburn, Sanders sought medical attention when symptoms persisted. Hospital tests revealed rising enzyme levels, leading to the diagnosis of a heart attack after a catheter procedure.

Reflecting on the experience, Sanders told CBS Sports, “Of all things, I don’t know why, that just never entered my mind.” He shared further details about how the incident changed his perspective on health and personal awareness regarding heart disease.

“This was a special birthday getting to just really learn about heart disease and meeting other people who’s had different struggles. You know, mine could’ve been much worse. So, just understanding different risk factors and just becoming aware,” Sanders shared on the NFL Players Second Acts Podcast.

To raise awareness around heart health, Sanders participated in “The Making of a Heart Attack” documentary. As he explained: “There was ‘The Making of a Heart Attack’ documentary that I was a part of, and really just talking about my story, but also the story of other individuals.”

Following these experiences, Sanders continues to encourage public discussion around heart disease risk factors and hopes that sharing his story will help others understand the importance of seeking timely medical care.
