April 11 marks birth anniversary of Pro Football Hall of Famer Dan Fortmann, noted guard, linebacker and tackle

Dan Fortmann was born on April 11, 1916, in Pearl River, New York. During his time at Pearl River High School, he earned 12 varsity letters and graduated as valedictorian. At age 16, he enrolled at Colgate University, where he balanced football and academic achievements. In 1936, Fortmann was drafted by the Chicago Bears, becoming the youngest starter in the NFL. He played as a guard and linebacker from 1936 to 1943, earning All-Pro honors every year and contributing to three NFL championships for the Bears. While playing professionally, he attended medical school and obtained his degree in 1940. After retiring from football, Fortmann practiced medicine in California and served as the team physician for the Los Angeles Rams from 1947 to 1963. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1965. Growing up in Pearl River played a significant role in his dual success in sports and medicine. Among his career highlights was his selection to the NFL’s inaugural All-Star Game in 1938.
