Air Force senior punter Luke Freer has been selected for the Ray Guy Award watch list, which annually honors the top punter in college football. The Augusta Sports Council compiles this list, and this year it features only 15 punters from the Football Bowl Subdivision. Freer’s inclusion points to his strong performances on the field and establishes him as one of the top punters nationwide.
Last season, Freer set a new Air Force single-season record by averaging 47.5 yards per punt, breaking a mark that had stood since 1985. He would have been recognized as having the fourth-best average nationally and the best in the Mountain West Conference with additional attempts. Freer also landed 10 punts inside the 20-yard line and kicked 14 punts over 50 yards.
Freer’s achievements go beyond being named to the Ray Guy Award watch list; he was also chosen as a preseason first-team All-Mountain West selection for the upcoming season. While punters may not always be at the center of attention, their performance can affect field position and impact game outcomes.
The Air Force football team will open its season against Bucknell on Aug. 30.
