The San Francisco 49ers are considering free agent wide receivers after Demarcus Robinson was suspended for three games by the National Football League. The suspension follows a violation of the league’s substance abuse policy related to his DUI in January.
Currently, the team’s receiver group is facing multiple injuries and contract issues. Brandon Aiyuk is rehabbing from a torn ACL, Jauan Jennings is managing a calf injury and a contract dispute, Jordan Watkins has a high ankle sprain, and Jacob Cowing is dealing with a hamstring injury. The remaining healthy receivers include Ricky Pearsall, Russell Gage, Robbie Chosen, Junior Burgen, Isaiah Hodgins, Malik Turner, and Malik Knowles.
With the roster thin at wide receiver ahead of Week One, general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan are looking into available options. Among possible signings are Amari Cooper, Tyler Boyd, Gabe Davis, Odell Beckham Jr., and Nelson Agholor.
Cooper, 31 years old, has played 10 professional seasons after being drafted by the Raiders in 2015. He has 711 receptions for 10,033 yards and 64 touchdowns but managed only 44 catches last season with the Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills.
Boyd is 30 and spent most of his nine-season career with the Cincinnati Bengals before recording one of his lowest statistical years in 2024 with the Tennessee Titans.
Davis played at UCF before spending four seasons with the Buffalo Bills. He joined Jacksonville but was limited to ten games due to a meniscus tear before being released in May.
Beckham entered the league as a first-round pick by the New York Giants in 2014. Now aged 32, he had limited production last season with nine catches over nine games for the Miami Dolphins.
Agholor also began as a first-round selection in 2015 with Philadelphia. Over his career, he has accumulated nearly five thousand receiving yards but had just thirteen receptions last year for Baltimore.
The team could look to sign any of these veterans to address its depth issues going into the new season.
