49ers’ John Lynch says Skyy Moore trade not directed at Jauan Jennings

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch addressed speculation regarding the team’s recent acquisition of wide receiver Skyy Moore from the Kansas City Chiefs. Questions have arisen as to whether the trade was intended to send a message to current wide receiver Jauan Jennings, who is engaged in a contract hold-in complicated by a lingering injury.

Lynch explained the rationale behind acquiring Moore and clarified the team’s position toward Jennings. “No message,” Lynch said. “We like the player, Skyy. We love Jauan. We’re getting close to the season. Players got to practice, but if they’re not healthy enough to do it, they can’t. So that’s kind of where we’re at with Jauan right now. (…) We’re getting there, where we got to get out there on that field. We’ll continue to let that thing unfold.”

Jennings delivered a career-best performance during the 2024 season and is reportedly seeking either a new contract or a trade from San Francisco. Although he participated at the beginning of training camp, his involvement has been limited due to an ongoing calf issue.

There has been public speculation about whether Jennings’ absence is solely related to his injury or also tied to his contract status. The team has so far only addressed Jennings’ health concerns and expressed optimism about keeping him on their roster.

With less than two weeks remaining until the start of the 2025 NFL regular season, Lynch was asked if he feels frustrated with Jennings’ current situation. “No,” Lynch responded. “Like I said, Jauan’s a big part of this team, and we’re looking forward to the time when he’s back out there again and hopefully that’s soon.”

The San Francisco 49ers are scheduled to open their new campaign against Seattle on Sept. 7 at Lumen Field.
