49ers consider veteran free agents ahead of training camp

With training camp approaching, the San Francisco 49ers are considering veteran free agents to strengthen their roster. General Manager John Lynch and his team are exploring options for both offense and defense.

Concerns about wide receiver depth arise due to Brandon Aiyuk’s uncertain health status. While Ricky Pearsall shows potential and Jauan Jennings had a strong 2024 season, the team is seeking additional experience. Veteran Gabe Davis has already participated in a workout with the 49ers. Head Coach Kyle Shanahan said on June 10, “I think it’s how we handle every situation, we monitor everything,” confirming interest in Davis.

On defense, the secondary needs reinforcement following Charvarius Ward’s departure. Young players Tre Brown and Deommodore Lenoir have potential but lack experience. Keenan Allen, a six-time Pro Bowler who played for the Chicago Bears last year, is a possible addition. Known for his reliable route running and hands, Allen caught 70 passes for 744 yards and seven touchdowns in 2024.

Rasul Douglas could also bolster the secondary. The cornerback excels in zone-heavy schemes and recorded 58 tackles with five pass breakups last season with the Bills. At nearly 30 years old, he offers valuable experience.

Stephon Gilmore is another option at cornerback. Despite being nearly 35 years old, Gilmore remains effective, having played well with the Vikings last year. He recorded 56 tackles and nine pass breakups in 15 starts.
