The San Francisco 49ers have added wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling to their practice squad ahead of the new season. The move, reported by The Athletic’s Matt Barrows, means Valdes-Scantling will not initially be on the team’s active roster.

Valdes-Scantling joins Junior Bergen, Robbie Chosen, and Malik Turner on the practice squad. As it stands, the 49ers’ active wide receivers include Ricky Pearsall, Jauan Jennings, Skyy Moore, Russell Gage, and Jordan Watkins. Watkins is recovering from a high-ankle sprain but did not appear on Injured Reserve or the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.
Brandon Aiyuk remains on the PUP list as he works through injury recovery. Demarcus Robinson is currently suspended for three games. Jacob Cowing was placed on Injured Reserve but is expected to return during the season.
The 49ers have not made public any immediate plans regarding potential elevation of Valdes-Scantling from the practice squad for Week One, though such moves are possible as teams finalize rosters before opening games.
