The San Francisco 49ers have completed a trade to bolster their running back depth for the 2025 National Football League season. The team, under the guidance of Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinee John Lynch, acquired running back Brian Robinson from the Washington Commanders in exchange for a sixth-round pick.
According to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, “Trade: Commanders are trading RB Brian Robinson to the 49ers in exchange for a 2026 sixth-round pick, sources tell ESPN.”
Robinson’s addition aims to address depth concerns that arose when Christian McCaffrey missed much of last season due to injury. The absence put added pressure on quarterback Brock Purdy and affected San Francisco’s running game.
During the 2024 season with Washington, Robinson played in 14 games, carrying the ball 187 times for 799 yards and scoring eight touchdowns, averaging 4.3 yards per carry. He also contributed as a receiver with 14 catches for 159 yards. At age 26, Robinson is expected to play both a supporting and possibly starting role if needed.
Lynch’s move comes as teams around the league make final roster changes before the regular season begins. The addition gives San Francisco another experienced option behind McCaffrey as they look to return to postseason contention.
San Francisco missed the playoffs last year after reaching the Super Bowl the previous season. With this transaction, Lynch has taken steps to strengthen the roster ahead of what many expect will be another competitive season in the NFC.
Further updates are anticipated as teams continue to finalize their rosters in preparation for kickoff.
